TRANSLATING "translated"

Hebrews 11:5

King James Version

5 By faith Enoch was translated

that he should not see death;

and was not found,

because God had translated him:

for before his translation he had this testimony,

that he pleased God.

This is a very curious verse.

What did it mean to be "translated"?

Who was Enoch?

Scripture tells us more:

Hebrews 11:5

Amplified Bible

5 By faith [that pleased God] Enoch was caught up and taken to heaven so that he would not have a glimpse of death; and he was not found because God had taken him; for even before he was taken [to heaven], he received the testimony [still on record] that he had walked with God and pleased Him.

Hebrews 11:5

Amplified Bible, Classic Edition

5 Because of faith Enoch was caught up and transferred to heaven, so that he did not have a glimpse of death; and he was not found, because God had translated him. For even before he was taken to heaven, he received testimony [still on record] that he had pleased and been satisfactory to God.

Hebrews 11:5

Christian Standard Bible

5 By faith Enoch was taken away, and so he did not experience death. He was not to be found because God took him away.[a] For before he was taken away, he was approved as one who pleased God.

Hebrews 11:5

Common English Bible

5 By faith Enoch was taken up so that he didn’t see death, and he wasn’t found because God took him up.[a] He was given approval for having pleased God before he was taken up.

Hebrews 11:5

Complete Jewish Bible

5 By trusting, Hanokh was taken away from this life without seeing death — “He was not to be found, because God took him away” — for he has been attested as having been, prior to being taken away, well pleasing to God

Hebrews 11:5

Contemporary English Version

5  Enoch had faith and did not die. He pleased God, and God took him up to heaven. This is why his body was never found.

Hebrews 11:5

Disciples’ Literal New Testament

5 By faith Enoch was removed[a], so as not to see death: “And he was not found because God removed him” [Gen 5:24]. For before the removal, he has been attested to have pleased God.

Hebrews 11:5

Easy-to-Read Version

5 Enoch was carried away from this earth, so he never died. The Scriptures tell us that before he was carried off, he was a man who pleased God. Later, no one knew where he was, because God had taken Enoch to be with him. This all happened because he had faith.

Hebrews 11:5

Expanded Bible

5 It was by faith that Enoch was taken to heaven so he would not ·die [experience/L see death]. He could not be found, because God had taken him away [Gen. 5:22–24]. Before he was taken, ·the Scripture says that he was [L he was commended as] a man who truly pleased God.

Hebrews 11:5

Good News Translation

5 It was faith that kept Enoch from dying. Instead, he was taken up to God, and nobody could find him, because God had taken him up. The scripture says that before Enoch was taken up, he had pleased God.

Hebrews 11:5-6

J.B. Phillips New Testament

ENOCH

5-6 It was because of his faith that Enoch was promoted to the eternal world without experiencing death. He disappeared from this world because God promoted him, and before that happened his reputation was that “he pleased God”. And without faith it is impossible to please him. The man who approaches God must have faith in two things, first that God exists and secondly that it is worth a man’s while to try to find God.

Hebrews 11:5

Living Bible

5 Enoch trusted God too, and that is why God took him away to heaven without dying; suddenly he was gone because God took him. Before this happened God had said[a] how pleased he was with Enoch.

Hebrews 11:5

New Living Translation

5 It was by faith that Enoch was taken up to heaven without dying—“he disappeared, because God took him.”[a] For before he was taken up, he was known as a person who pleased God.

Yehudim in Moshiach 11:5

Orthodox Jewish Bible

5 By Emunah Chanoch was taken up, was translated, not to see mavet, V’EINENNU KI LAKACH OTO ELOHIM ("and he was not, because G-d took him [up]" Gn 5:24). Before Chanoch was raptured in his aliyah l’Shomayim, he received solemn eidus (testimony) that he had been pleasing to Hashem.
